丸山千枚田（まるやませんまいだ）は「日本の棚田百選」にも選ばれ、その中でも特に景観が素晴らしいことで有名です。棚田とは、急斜面の山間地に小さな水田を階段状に重ねたものです。山岳地帯の多い日本で、少しでも収穫量を増やすために開墾されました。〝耕して天に至る〟と形容される棚田は、丸山千枚田では実に1,340枚ほどもあります。まさに水田が天へと続く階段のように見える風景ですね。
Maruyama Senmaida is the place chosen as one of 100 the best Tanada and well known as its splendid view. “Tanada”, roughly translated as “terrace formed rice field” is the rice paddy fields stacking like stair on steep slope of mountain and is made to increase crop harvest even a little.
Often described as “cultivating to heaven”, Maruyama senmaida has 1340 tanadas. Their view truly looks like stairs to the heaven made by paddy fields.

周辺の緑に染まる山々と澄みわたる青空に雲海、ひとつとして同じ形をしていない小さな小さな湖のように見える棚田が、まるで文様を描いているようにも見えます。光に照らされた水田がきらめく時には、息をのむような美しさに驚くことでしょう。
Surrounded by lush green mountains, clear blue sky, sea of clouds… and tanadas with various unique shapes in front of your eyes. The view looks like huge natural tapestry. You must be surprised when you see shining tanadas with sunlight.

棚田独特の景観は「日本のピラミッド」と言われ、観光スポットとしても人気を集めています。春の田植え、青々とした稲が絨毯のように広がる夏、黄金色の稲穂がたっぷりと揺れる収穫時期。１年を通じて、さまざまな景観が楽しめます。冬場、土だけでおおわれた季節でさえ、米作りの労苦を思えば、その素朴な光景もまた心に響くのです。
The unique landscape of tanada is called as “Japanese pyramids” and is gaining popularity as tourist attraction. Rice planting in Spring, lush green rice carpet in Summer, golden rice field in Autumn, the harvest season… you can enjoy every season with gorgeous view. Even in winter, all you can see is bare tanada fields covered with soil – its simple sight let you imagine next season and people working diligently for rice cultivation.季節ごとだけではありません。水面が鏡のように光る朝がた、沈む夕陽に水田が溶け込んでいく夕暮れ時、１日の間にも刻々と変化する風景に目も心までも奪われてしまうはずです。
Let’s also look at the change with time – in the morning, paddy surface of tanada is shining like the mirror. Before dark, tanada are blend into dark with sunset. Every hour shows you unique landscape and pleases your eyes and heart.

こちらは丸山千枚田の「虫おくり」です。いわゆる害虫駆除ですが、昭和28年まで実際に行われていました。当時は子ども達がお寺からお札をもらい、太鼓や鐘を鳴らし、松明で照らして、音と光で害虫を追い払っていたそうです。
This is “mushi-okuri”(see-off insects) in Maruyama Senmaida. Its the local event with pest extermination and actually held till 1955. Children with paper amulet of the temple went to paddy fields and drived insects out with torch light and drum and bell sounds.

「虫おくり」は、お米を主食としてきた日本人にとって、ひと粒の米も失うことなく収穫できるよう豊作の祈りをこめた大切な行事でした。熊野古道が世界遺産になった時から農耕行事として復活し、日が暮れる頃から1,340個のキャンドルがともされ、幻想的な光景を見ることができます。毎年、6月～7月に開催されているので、タイミングがあえばぜひ訪れたいですね。
“Mushi-okuri” was an important events for Japanese, living on rice. The events is wishful one implying good harvest without losing even one grain. It is revived since Kumano Kodo Street is registered as World Heritage Site and held every June and July. At dusk, fantastic tanada scenery with 1340 candle lights await you. If you have a change, don’t miss it.
