熊野灘に面して1キロほど続く、鬼ヶ城（おにがじょう）です。まずは鬼ヶ城独特の景観をご覧ください。
Please look at a unique view of Onigajo, about 1km long facint the Kumano Nada.伊勢志摩から続くリアス式海岸の荒波に削られた岸壁、岩肌の隆起は実に豪快です。1935年には国の天然記念物に指定され、その後、世界遺産にも登録されました。
A wave-cut criff spectacular view fron Ise Shima is so spectacular. Designated as a national natural monument on 1935, then registered in the World Heritage List.

岸壁には大小の海蝕洞（かいしょくどう）があります。海蝕洞とは、波で浸食されできた洞窟です。打ち寄せる何万回、何百万回という荒波は、固い岩をも少しずつ削り落とし、大小さまざまな洞窟を作りました。
There are various sizes of sea caves on the cliff, eroded in the waves. Hundreds and millions waves lapping the hard rocks made such caves.

鬼ヶ城の海蝕洞は、その大きさや鋭く削られた先端など見所が多く、特に「鬼の岩屋（おにのいわや）」と呼ばれる千畳敷は見事です。巨大な岩の天蓋は高さ約15メートル、見上げると鋭い岩の天井がせり出し、迫力満点です。
There are many spot of interests on sea caves of Onigajo. Big caves, keen edged rock point, and the most interest one is a large rock named “Onino Iwaya”(the Ogre’s cave) . About 15 meters height, the sharp rock ceiling covers the sky – it is so great view.

はるか昔、平安時代、鬼と恐れられた海賊を、当時の大将軍・坂上田村麻呂が討伐した伝説から「鬼の岩屋」と名付けられた言い伝えがあります。その後、山頂に城が築かれ、この地全体をふくめて「鬼ヶ城」と呼ばれるようになりました。ごつごつした奇岩がつづき、えぐられたような洞窟には鬼が隠れ住んでいそうな・・・まさに鬼ヶ島（日本昔話・桃太郎が鬼を退治しに行く、鬼ヶ島のこと）とは「こんな所だったのでは」と思わず想像してしまいますね。
Long time ago, in the Heian period, pirates were feared as ogres. A great shogun(general) of those days, Sakanoue no Tamuramaro had defeated them so this place have come to be called as “Onino Iwaya”. After that, a castle have built on the top and the place was called “Onigajo”(Ogre castle). People imagined the dangerous ogres living in the caves on strangely shaped rocks. It also reminds us “Onigashima”(the island where ogres are lived, appears Japanese old tale “Momotarou”).

鬼ヶ城の岸壁には遊歩道があります。岩肌に添うように作られており、時には波しぶきをうけながら海に面した岸壁を歩くのはスリル満点です。千畳敷を越えると、断崖絶壁が現れます。あまりの断崖に猿も思わず後戻りしてしまうので「猿戻り」と名前がついています。さらに先へ行くと「あきらめて犬が戻っていく」ことから「犬戻り」とよばれる岩壁もあります。森林をかけめぐる動物たちでさえ避けて通る、それほど険しい崖が続きます。様々な形状の奇岩もあり、目の前には太平洋が広がる。雄大なパノラマを間近で見られるのは得がたい体験ですね。
There is the promenade along the cliff of Onigajo. Visitors can experience thrilling walk there under the waves. Over large rocks, you will find a precipitous cliff. Even nimble monkeys backtracked, so the cliff is named as “Sarumodori”(monkey’s turn back). There is also “Inumodori”, named for sharp cliff where dogs even give up on going. It will be a valuable experience standing there with panoramic view, surrounded by strangely shaped rocks and facing the Pacific ocean.

連なる奇岩に、打ち寄せる激しい波しぶき…鬼ヶ城は天候によっては獰猛な姿を現します。しかし、穏やかな日には紺碧の海と青々とした木々の緑、岩肌のダイナミックな姿に大きな感動を覚えるはずです。また、ゆるやかな風が吹く日には、海からの潮の香りに包まれ、心やわらぐ時を過ごせます。いずれにしても自然の力を肌で感じることができる貴重な観光スポットです。
Huge rocks and rough waves…sometimes Onigajo shows us its fierce figure. On mild weather days, it shows dynamic scenery with blue ocean and lush green, and spectacular rocks. Sometimes it welcomes you with gentle breeze and scent of tide. Anyway and anyhow, visitors can feel nature power directly at Onigajo.

足もとはあまりよくないので、歩きやすい靴で行きましょう。鬼ヶ城センターから西口までは、片道約30～40分の道のりです。台風や強風の日はクローズされるので、ぜひ晴天の日に訪れてみて下さいね。
We recommend you wearing shoes that are easy to walk. It takes 30-40 minutes one way from Onigajo center to West Gate. Please consider of visiting the place on sunny day, because it closes on windy day and typhoon day.
