三重県伊勢市にある二見浦では、かつて伊勢神宮参拝の前に禊（みそ）ぎをする「浜参宮」という習わしがありました。禊ぎとは、神事にあたって水で体を洗い清めることです。二見浦は日本の渚百選にも選ばれた美しい海です。ここで禊ぎを行うことで心身ともに清らかになると信じられていたのでしょう。今でもまず二見興玉神社でお祓いを受け、その後、伊勢神宮へ向かう参拝者も多くいます。
Futamiura in Ise city in Mie Prefecture, it has been customary named “Hamasangu” to cleanse the body before worshipping Ise Jingu shrine. Cleansing body is called “misogi”, using cold water to wash body to purify the body and soul. Sea at Futamiura is well known as beautiful shore so it was believed that its seawater has the power to purification. Today many worshippers still performing misogi at Futami Okitama shrine at Futamiura before visiting Ise Jingu shrine.

二見浦には、大きな男岩と小さな女岩を注連縄（しめなわ）で結んだ「夫婦岩（めおといわ）」があります。二見興玉神社があり、夫婦岩は、二見浦の沖合に沈む「興玉神石（おきたましんせき）」と日の大神（太陽）を拝する鳥居とみなされています。鳥居とは、神社の中と外を分ける門のようなもので、鳥居をくぐり本殿へと続く道を参道と呼びます。夫婦岩を鳥居と見立てれば、神社へ続く参道は海の中、おとぎ話のようですね。
There is “Meoto Iwa”, roughly translated couple rocks at Futamiura. Two rocks tied with shimenawa(sacred straw festoon) and bigger rock expresses male, smaller expresses female. There is Futami Okitama shrine near and Meoto Iwa represents a sacred gate “torii” to “Okitama Shinseki”(Divine stone of Okitama) which exist offshore of Futamiura, and the Sun god. “Torii” is not also a gate but works as border between shrine inside and outside, and road leads to main shrine from torii is called “sando”. If we see Meoto Iwa as torii gate, sando lies deep in the sea… it is like fantastic fairytale.
ふたつの岩をしっかりと結びつけているのが大注連縄です。男岩と女岩を結んでいることから、夫婦円満や恋愛成就、縁結びの願掛けで有名になりました。
“Ooshimenawa”(big shimenawa) ties two rocks tightly. Male rock and female rock are together by this festoon. It reminds us happy husband and wife so these rocks are very popular as wising place for happy mariage and love fulfillment.

日本では「ご縁がある」という言い方をよくします。めぐりあわせという意味ですが、恋愛はもちろん、新しい人との出会いにも使われます。他にも、受験や就職活動で希望するところと「ご縁があるように（つながりができる、縁が結ばれるように）」と祈ります。夫婦岩はまさに太い注連縄でしっかりと結ばれており、縁結びの象徴と言われる所以です。
Japanese often uses a phrase”ご縁がある(goen ga aru, be linked by fate)”. This “goen”(fate) means “good coincidence”, and is often used not only in love relationship but new encounter. Japanese also wish good “goen” in school, workplace for new and good human relations. Meoto Iwa is a symbol of every firm and solid relationship.

夫婦岩をバックに新婚旅行で記念撮影をした若いカップルが、赤ちゃんを連れて家族写真を撮影する。やがて子どもが独立し二人の生活になった時にふたたび訪れ「夫婦円満、健康で過ごしてきたことを改めて幸せに思った」という家族の歴史をここ、夫婦岩でふりかえる老夫婦の話を聞きました。なんとも心洗われるようなエピソードですね。
Meoto Iwa is a part of history of each visitor’s life. Here is a story of happy couple. Once a young couple in their honeymoon took a photo against Meoto Iwa. And they visited as family of tree with their baby and thanked for their happy marriage and healthy life. Then they visit the place again after their child is independent of them to look back their life. What a soothed episode!

年に数回、大注連縄を新しく結びなおされる「大注連縄張神事」があり、この日は特に多くの人で賑わいます。波しぶきのなか男たちが注連縄を持っていく勇壮な姿に歓声があがります。
A shinto ritual called “Ooshimenawahari shinji”(tightening shimenawa) is held several times a year. It is very crowded with many people in the event day. The men carrying up shimenawa in sea spray is a very inspiring sight.

また、5月から7月には、夫婦岩の間から日の出が見られます。夏至の前後で天気の良い日には、はるか遠く富士山の背からのぼりゆく太陽も拝めるかもしれません。
From May to July, you can see sunrise between Meoto Iwa. If you could visit the place in sunny day near the summer solstice, Mt. Fuji far away in the distance might come into view.

秋から冬の間は、夜もまた素晴らしい光景が広がります。夫婦岩の間にぽっかりと満月が浮かぶことも！　月明かりの下で見る夫婦岩は荘厳であり、荒波の合間にすっくりとたたずむ姿には力強い自然の息吹を感じます。
In Fall and Winter, splendid night view welcomes you. Sometimes the full moon floats between Meoto Iwa! To see Meoto Iwa under the moonlight is so impressive – Their standing figure in the heavy seas reminds us of power of nature.

この夫婦岩、写真では少し遠く見えますが、実際に行くと歩道からすぐ側にあります。雲が薄くなりつつ、海の色が濃さを増し、ふたつの岩を結びつけている注連縄もはっきりと手にとるように見えてくるでしょう。
Though Meoto Iwa looks far in the picture, actually they stands near sidewalk. You can see clearly their shape standing in the deep blue see.

伊勢神宮が森閑として神聖な場所であるとすれば、夫婦岩と二見興玉神社は、青い海と天高い空に守られた癒やしの場所。波しぶきの中でも注連縄でしっかりと結ばれた夫婦岩に手をあわせ、人と人との縁がより深まることを願うパワースポットです。愛嬌のある蛙の銅像もとても可愛いので、見逃さないで下さいね！
Ise Jingu is known as very solemn and sacred place. On the other hand, Meoto Iwa and Futami Okitama shrine is an approachable refreshing place. Comfortable spiritual site protected by blue ocean and sky. Let’s pray and wish at Meoto Iwa for your “goen”, better encounter and relationship. Don’t miss lovely frog statue near it!
